expository essay

an essay that describes or explains something, usually of technical nature. This can be in the context of persuading the reader of an argument, but it can also be pure description. In writing an expository essay, the concept of classifications or categories must be understood. Examples of topics for expository writing might be How pistons work, Why African tribes are divided by national boundaries, Why the British Premier Soccer League is so successful.
