finite verb

Subject:

  • English First Additional Language
  • English Home Language

a form of the verb that can express action on its own. It indicates tense, shows whether the subject is singular or plural, and what the subject is. E.g. in I play, the finite verb play is in the present tense, has a singular subject and the subject is the first person. (If the subject were third person (he plays) the verb play would have an s at the end.)
