the word lyric comes from lyre, a stringed musical instrument. It therefore originally meant a poem that could be sung. It has, however, come to mean any poem expressing an emotion, or a mood. Often love poems are described as lyrics e.g. O my loveâ??s like a red, red rose (Burns).
